    What brand of windows are featured in the video ? Do you recommend Irish windows or should you go further a field ?

    • @Energyquarter
      @Energyquarter 7 лет назад

      The choice of window can depend on a lot of factors related to the project - e.g. will it be a Passive Certified building? However, the fitting detail of the windows is as important, as poorly fitted windows will adversely impact on the performance of the building.

    Really good video, Tomas. You show, how easy it is, to build and to run a passive house. It's nice to realize, that you will never ever have a problem with energy again in a passive house: These tiny little amounts of wood pellets will always be available. Vacuum insulation similar to that featured in the video (with the Lambda value of 0.0022) is available from various suppliers. For example you could check out the Kingspan product. Details: www.kingspaninsulation.co.uk/Products/Optim-R/Optim-R/Overview.aspx The Energyquarter team

    I am renovating a house with passiv standards in mind. I want mhrv and also want it to heat the house with a water coil like in this vid. Q: what companies in Ireland offer this? The 3 I've spoken to won't supply a system with a coil. What brand is the unit in the vid?? Would really appreciate a reply and thank you very much for these invaluable videos. Thanks

    First of all, thank you for all the videos in the series about passive houses! I have a question regarding thermal bridges. If we have old house without insulation, is there any way to create a thermal break for an existing wall or to improve the insulation?

    • @Energyquarter
      @Energyquarter 9 лет назад

      This is a great question and also a great challenge. Dealing with the wall to floor and foundation junction in existing dwellings is very difficult in terms of thermal bridging. From a practical perspective, assuming you're not taking out the internal floor, the best you can do is to excavate the ground externally to expose the foundation wall as far as the foundation and externally insulate the wall with an appropriate insulation product. Ideally this insulation would continue vertically up the wall to clad the entire house. Hope that helps. Tomas O'Leary, Passive House Academy.

    Looks good but I do not know if this qualify as a retrofit or upgrade. Is more a demolition and a new building on the same place. Is the energy produced by the solar PV array considered in those 70kWh/m2/year ? Or is just the additional energy that building requires except for what is produced locally by solar and wind? My building is 65sqm uses under 100kWh/month electricity for appliances all this is generated by solar and wind offgrid and for heating as of now is not electric is with propane but it uses around 1000kWh in the coldest month of the year around 4000 to 5000kWh / heating season. This makes my house at this moment under 100kWh/m2/year. But in the future I want to heat the house 100% with electricity generated by a large solar PV array (I need around 6 to 7kW of PV and one or two 1kW wind turbines) Seems that PV used for direct heating with resistive elements is the least expensive option (no battery necessary) the energy will be stored in the form of heat in the 14 cubic meter insulated concrete slab. This concrete slab can store about 100kWh at a delta of 10C

    • @Energyquarter
      @Energyquarter 9 лет назад

      Our understanding is that the owners intend to submit the project for EnerPHit certification. Their intention is also at some stage to supply excess output from the PV array back to the grid.

      ***** You don't really have a Passive House (or one that is certified, anyway). A true Passive House ALWAYS has a ventilation system to bring in fresh air. For a cold climate the recommended ones are exhaust or balanced. Actually a balanced one (a fan for bringing in fresh air and a fan for exhausting stale air) will work in any climate. Also, it is highly advisible that you don't fill the living space with polluting materials--the worst being carpeting, particleboard cabinetry, and combustion appliances (gas stoves and fireplaces--for example). And for heaven's sake, don't use any VOC emitting paints or finishes! Use an exhaust fan hood of at least 400 cfm when you cook. Learn how to clean without using toxic products, you know, just about anything you can buy off-the-shelf at a typical grocery store (I use only baking soda, borax, and white wine vinegar). Don't use perfumed anything in the house--perfumes are quite toxic. Ideally, your house should be completely odor-free. The suggestion of using an engineer to evaluate the building site is a good idea, though.

    This series of videos make building a passive house look so straightforward. It's good that such detail can be explained and demonstrated so clearly, and surely makes the uptake of passive house-building so much more acceptable to the novice. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.

    There are 3 air flow rate settings, commonly referred to as ‘boost’ (maximum mode), ‘normal’ (used 90% of the time) and ‘set-back’ (used to reduce air flow rate when the building is left unoccupied for an extended period). The recommended air change rate for the entire building is between 0.3 and say 0.5 ACH. It has been my experience living in a Passive House for the past 8 years that the humidity (at least in Ireland) is very comfortable in winter, with no dry skin or respiratory issues.

  • @divisioneight
    @divisioneight 11 лет назад

    Very interesting Tomas. Questions; The thermostat has three settings. When the house is unoccupied during the weekday, is the system left on "normal" mode or reduced? Also, what about humidity control during winter months when the air is very dry and the humidity is low causing dry skin and respitory issues? Does the HRV also recirculate the needed humidity inside the house? Again, wonderful videos, and a fascinating way to build a house.

    I do like the heater battery method of heat distribution, it saves time plumping in a radiator or under floor heating system.

  • @garcianicholas88
    @garcianicholas88 11 лет назад

    Good catch on the last little bit about the radiators. I use to install HVAC but moved on to my Builders License. One thing a HVAC installer will do when remodeling or new construction is ALWAYS ALWAYS put a register for supply heat in front of a window or sliding door openings. Good catch you guys. Little extreme on the tape around the window part, because down the road tape becomes brittle and its adhesion wears away, but I'm sure if the house never settles from weather itll stay there.

    It's just to bad that they are wasting all this money on all these layers when they could use a single 2x4 wall and 2 inches closed cell spray foam in it and that will out perform what they are doing easily. Spray foam in the only way to go, ever.
